As part of my handheld research, I need proof of everything. So what chip is used in Gakken Dig Dug? Obviously a HD38820, but to be sure, the display has to be taken off........

What did you make a stop-motion of? Can you provide a link that's not a Facebook link? (Not everyone uses Facebook... Cool and Facebook blocks non-FB users from seeing most things.)

I'll have to look at my spare Dig Dug, does part of the display have to be de-soldered to see the chip? Been a while since I've had that one open...

Yes,
It has to be desoldered as it is a 2-sided pin panel.
It will be out in the public soon, hope within a week.
