D.K. Jr. is extremely fun. It has been so damn long i would have to fire it up and go a few rounds to refresh my memory on it though. Its been a few years. I thought the graphics were fantastic for a game of this age. Hmm....guess i should go get some C cells. I am busy as hell with work for the next few days but if i get a chance i will try to snap a screenshot or two. |

blue6demon, How did you get such a clear picture of the Capital ship? This is taken directly from the game and is as clear as I can get it.

I got it in an article that was talking about how often you see the capital ship in early arcade games, as in pac man plus, Dig Dug and such, have a look !

MAME would probably be the best way to do it if you want other ships. Just do screen caps of the game, they should be pixel-perfect. Then enlarge it with Photoshop or something...
There's also a utility out there that will actually grab graphics directly from the ROM files. So if it's something that is animated (like the ship in Galaga that sort of 'flaps' as it moves around), you can grab the entire animation sequence... I just can't remember the name of the utility that does this, anyone know off hand? There's probably more than one... |

I did a 'Print Screen' from the score screen of the game then sharpened it and shrunk it using a version of Adobe Photoshop.

Ah, don't use Print Screen... Hit F12 instead. This will take a 1-to-1 sized screen cap and save it in the 'snap' directory under MAME. You will get something like this (I used Galaga):
In Photoshop, crop out the tiny image of the ship:
And then re-size it by an EXACT multiple of the image size (this image, for example, is 23x23 pixels, so only resize it to 46x46 or 92x92... Some multiple of 23). And make sure you set 'Resample Image' to 'Nearest Neighbor' or it will make it look blurry... You should be left with this (I cropped off a little more of the black after I re-sized it):
I also saved it as a .GIF instead of .JPG. That way it will stay nice and clear, and it's only 476 bytes.
Here's the Galaxian ships:
I can make an Avatar section of things like this if people want them...

Not a bad idea Rik for the little database of avatars !
The F12 key in MAME is cool because it gives you that screen shot in the games list, so you can see that marvelous pterodactyl kill you did in Joust or that time you were in the banana stage on Ms Pac Man etc... _________________ Keep on playing... no matter what ! |

There's also a command-line switch that will allow you record your entire game. You turn this on, play like hell for an hour (or a minute, depending on how good you are ), and then you can load the record file back into MAME and watch it relpay your entire game...
it can be kind of finicky, but it's pretty neat when it works...

Talking of MAME, can anyone point me in the right direction to get an up to date version at a sensible price ?
Thanks, Neil. |
