Please do not use images from my site in your auction. If they are not removed, I will have eBay close the auction for copyright infringement. If you don't own a camera, you can post a link to my website in your listing, but don't use the images as if that's the actual item you are selling.

Actually, it really isn't... I don't think. Where do you see a reference to the insurance cost? I only see $9.80 shipping with no insurance.

Insurance is about $1 or so per $100.

Rik

Edit- actually, I see now that the seller revised the shipping terms... Did he change something?

Pretty amazing technology for the "early 70's"!

Also, he wants to use a flat rate priority box for almost $10, whatta n00b!

I offered him $30, which was automatically declined. I told him:
No one took it before at $80, that should tell you something. I'd offer a bit more if you weren't wasting money by using a flat-rate priority box on this tiny item. Shipping should be $4.80 for Priority, coast-to-coast.

(I wasn't expecting $30 to be accepted anyway!)

I forgot to tell him his brother must have used a time machine.

I won my MIB Catch-A-Coke off eBay for $9.99... Mr. Green

He should try selling it in the Coke memorabilia category, I think it's actually worth more as a Coke collectible than a handheld game...

Is there a date on it? The museum says 1983 but I want to verify before I give this guy an even harder time, he is insistent that he got it in the 70's.

The game is just Monkey Business with a different LCD on it. Monkey Business came out in 1981, so the Catch-a-Coke is definitely after that. It's in storage, but the next time I see it, I'll check and see if there's a definite date on it (or if I'm just using 1983 because that's what the FAQ always said). But it's definitely early 1980's, not 70's.

Thanks! But I can't wait until you happen across it. The FAQ actually says "19??" so I'm thinking you fixed it in the museum when you got the game?

What year did the first LCD games appear? '79?

Anyway, he took the "early 70's" claim out of the auction already...

That's a question I've often wondered. What was the first LCD game?

Microvision came out in 79. Was that one of the first?

Most of the data on HandheldEmpire came from this site and if I didn't miss the dates or screen types then here are the first LCD games:
Code:

Milton Bradley, Microvision,                    1979
Mattel,         Horse Race Analyzer,            1979
Milton Bradley, Microvision (Foreign),          1979
Mattel,         Computer Gin,                   1979
Bambino,        Baseball,                       1979
Nintendo,       Ball,                           1980
Nintendo,       Vermin,                         1980
Mattel,         Computer Backgammon,            1980
Mattel,         Computer Chess,                 1980
Tomy,           Slimline Speedway,              1980
Mego,           Flag Man,                       1980
V-Tech,         Computron,                      1980
Nintendo,       Flagman,                        1980
Nintendo,       Fire,                           1980
Nintendo,       Judge,                          1980

There are many games with unknown release date so this is really unofficial info, I hope many details will pop up.
Edit: removed misleading titles that Neil UK mentioned in the next post, also fixed in the database. Thanks Neil

Thanks for that but i'm not sure of the accuracy of some of their info.

Battlestar Galactica, Brain Baffler, Kingpin II and Galoob Baseball aren't LCD games so maybe Microvision was one of the very first LCD games.

The Mego Mini-Vid games are also dated 1979.

I believe 79 is probably the year the earliest ones came out. Nintendo really got the LCDs going with the Game and Watch series, so that's probably a good guess...

I always considered Microvision the first LCD game... But there might be another game I've overlooked. Looking back through the dept store catalogs, I can't find any LCD games forsale in 1978, and only Microvision in 1979.

Horse Race and Gin I don't really consider games since they weren't aimed at kids (and I think they were kind of expensive, $100 or more each), and they don't actually show up in catalogs until 1980 (though they might have been copyrighted in 1979 which is where the date in the FAQ would have come from). Same with the Mego games, I don't see them in catalogs until 1980.
