And look at what was just recently announced:

http://www.kickstarter.com/pro.....3d-printer

Cool This one could probably produce decent battery covers (and all kinds of other cool stuff...)

The 'affordable' 3D printers I've seen so far produce pretty mediocre models... The best bet would still be using Shapeways or something like to print them for you, but they'd probably charge $10-15 for a cover. Not too bad I suppose if it's for a $100+ game... And they have a REALLY good laser printer...

HI.
Pretty neat.
I've been seeing a lot of battery covers on ebay over the past week. Price dropping too.

Awesome 3d printer, great detail which is usually bad with the other type of 3d printers that have appeared on kickstarter.

You'd need to have a lot of battery covers to print to justify the $2500 cost. Lets not forget that you would also need a 3d scanner to scan an existing battery cover.

If there were more members on this forum I'd suggest we all chip and buy one of these for this community .

There is a workshop in Vienna, where you can become member and use the printer everytime its and you need it. I think the annual fee 120,- incl the introduction to the system.

If there are enough members that are interested in this and have useable 3d plans for battery covers, I might get member and print them. Of course marked as "faksimile", so that noone can sell it as original Smile
Since I am in need of a few covers I am definitely interested.

How about that, anyone?

Sounds good Woolfman, the only tricky bit would be getting the battery cover 3d files. I doubt they exist so they would need to be created by doing a 3d scan of an existing battery cover. Does the Workshop have a 3d scanner?

Someone with decent modeling skills could very easily build the battery covers... They are, for the most part, very simple in design. They may not be 100% accurate, but they'd work and look good...

Of course, if we want some near-perfection, we'd have to scan... I'm hoping I can find someone with scanner access that might be willing to help out just for the sake of the hobby... There's companies that will do it, but I think their cheapest price is $50. That could probably be made back pretty quickly for almost any game though...

Maybe due to the small size they'd offer a discount... Cool

OK these aren't battery covers, but this link might be useful:

So what do we do - is it realistic that we get someone to collect those covers and scan and print them?

I am definitely interested...

I wonder if scanning is accurate and if it is easy. Just made a Coleco one 3d model with a Multitoyo to measure the thing.

So am I assuming right - nobody here is really interested in the whole thing?

Just finished 2 more 3D models: the Game & Watch one and the Nintendo Table top cover. I see there are now 35 3D printing services in my city, even with different colors, so much more options than last years expensive Shapeways only service.
