Hello, I am looking for a site that charts all the correct voltage, polarity and amp power supply input for most handhelds, any idea?
thanks |

Well, polarity is really the only one to worry about. They will all work with any 6-9v power adapter 200ma or higher.
You just have to plug it in the right way.
I've documented that on a few games on my website, but it's hardly complete... Is there a certain game in particular you are wondering about?
Also, if there is a manual on the website, check that. Some of them mention the polarity... |

Here's what I can find out easily:
+ for center-pole positive, - for negative:
These I know for sure:
+ENTEX SPIDERS (all Entex games that use the 6060 adapter are + , usually mentioned on the back of the box)
+ENTEX DEFENDER
+ENTEX TURTLES
-EPOCH DRACULA HOUSE
+BANDAI FL BURGER TIME
-TOMY TRON
-TOMY WHEELIE CROSSER
Every documented Gakken game I have is center-pole positive, so these probably are as well:
GAKKEN FITTER
GAKKEN PAINT ROLLER
GAKKEN JUNGLER
GAKKEN AMIDAR
GAKKEN FROGGER
Not 100% sure on these:
GRANDSTAND SCRAMBLE
BANDAI CRAZY CLIMBER
BANDAI FL ZAXXON
BANDAI VAMPIRE
TOMY KINGMAN
BANDAI LUPIN
(And do you mean Tomy Lupin? If so, it's - )
Grandstand Scramble is made by Epoch, all their games seem to be negative.
Tomy games seem to be negative.
Bandai games seem to be center-pole positive most of the time, so I'd try + on those.
Use about 7.5 volts, turn the game off, check the plug, plug it in, turn the game FOR A SPLIT-SECOND. If it doesn't come on immediately, turn it back off. Reversed polarity will damage the games, but it's usually not instant.
Of course, try that at your own risk, but that's how I figured it out on several games and I never fried one when it was reversed if I switched it off instantly...
Safer route, if you are comfortable opening the games, open them up and see what battery terminal the center post of the AC plug is wired to. |

I can tell all games run from 5 volt too. I've converted all my obsolete phone chargers with weird plugs to VFD power sources.
About polarity, it would also be nice to know which brands have diodes in place and which don't. The ones with a diode, can deal with wrong polarity. _________________ Making the book on handheld games: www.2kboffun.com |

Did you measure the voltage on those? Was it actually 5v, or a little higher? I feel like most of the time I test an AC adapter, the voltage is usually a little higher than stated (every '6v' adapter I have seems to test close to 9 for example).
Will the diode protect the game with no problems, or do the diodes pop like a fuse and you have to replace them?
(That's usually what happens to games without them, a transistor blows and you have to replace it. Sometimes it's worse, but usually a transistor swap will fix them...) |
