Yeah, many of the dedicated handhelds from the last fifteen years have been awful, simply because designers are no longer encouraged to be resourceful; to do more with less. Part of the charm of a well-designed LCD or VFD game is that it faithfully reproduces the gameplay of an arcade or console title despite its limited technology.
Today's dedicated handhelds are little more than toys, and not much thought is put into their design because of that. If it's just good enough to keep you amused for a minute and to seed your mind with subliminal advertising for Sonic the Hedgehog or Burger King Whoppers or whatever, then it's done its job.
Having said that, I did like the Tiger Pinball handheld from the late 1980s. I think I rolled that bad boy back when I was a kid... I enjoyed it that much! By contrast, Tiger's early 80s LCD games were kind of crummy. I had King Kong back when I was 11 or 12, and couldn't shake the feeling that it was kind of lame, especially in comparison to the majesty of Nintendo's Donkey Kong Game and Watches. Considering the "quality" of its products, I'm stunned that Tiger has survived for as long as it has. |

Who makes handhelds now? The medium is mostly those LCD things. I can think of Radica and Excalibur as well as the mentioned Tiger. There have been perhaps just a couple of games from the last few years that are fun for more than a minute. Hasbro's Nemesis Factor is a good talking puzzle game (though awfully loud -- I have to figure out how to dampen the sound source in there). And Radica's 20Q, which is the handheld form of that website that asks you what you are thinking of. Tiger's Superplexus is loved by many, though I haven't tried to play it yet (a metal marble in a 3-D course inside a ball). |

MGA (Micro Games of America) still makes games, they are the ones making all the little color versions of the classic games (Centipede, Pac Man, Asteroids, Breakout, etc...)

And here I thought that all they made these days were those Bratz dolls!
Maybe they could make a handheld Bratz game, where all the characters have seventeen pound lips and more makeup than the late Tammy Fay Messner... |

I cant stand those sonic lcd games... I wish tiger would still make handheld LCD games based on arcade titles. _________________ "Emulators are for the non collectors" |
