I've always wanted to turn one of those Coleco mini arcades into a mame machine. The other week I got sent a Coleco Pacman mini arcade which was missing most of its stickers, decided to open it up and proceeded to break the PCB :realmad:

Making best of a bad situation I thought Id give maming this thing out a go. My concept for the artwork was, what if Coleco launched a Galaga mini arcade, what would it look like. I ended up spending a few days image editing some Galaga artwork for it , then printing it off my self. The internals are an iCade Jr I got from Thinkgeek for $15. I modded the iCade JR board heavily to wire in some real buttons and to marry an original Coleco Mini arcade joystick to it. I also, married the original Coleco /mini arcade battery pack into it.

It works via bluetooth connection to your iphone or ipod touch and will run :

* Most Emulators including imame4all
* All IOS games that support the iCade (like Temple Run(which it's awesome for) etc, there are a lot now)
* All IOS Games generally that can be mapped via Blutrol (As Blutrol supports the iCade)

Here is a demo of the Coleco Galaga Mini Cab I built:

Also, here are some old 80's TV ads for the Coleco Mini Arcades:

I couldn't help it, so I also made my own spoof ad for the Coleco Galaga I built. You can see it here:

Wow, that is very impressive... So glad I got Mame4All on my phone before they pulled it! Smile (Although now that I have a five, I haven't been able to add games to it...)

I've always wanted to do something like that myself though, I love the idea of just using an iPod Touch for the screen... That's pretty awesome. I want to do it with Dragon's Lair. Cool

BTW, how did you break the circuit board of the game? Did you try to take it apart without removing all the screws, or did something else happen?

I knew you would pick that point up Rik Very Happy

Yep, even though I knew there was a trick to opening it and that you had instructions on this site on how to open it. I still tried to rip the hood off without unscrewing the screws under the Control panel sticker. I think sub conciously I wanted to break it so I could mame it out Razz

Hehe, I know the feeling... I have two pretty bad condition Pac-Mans that want to do something like that to... But they do, technically, work, so I haven't been able to bring myself to gut them... (I'd still keep the parts for fixing nicer games though, so it wouldn't be a complete loss.)

I may just have to make a portable Xevious though... Cool

If anyone want's to have a go at building their own (like a portable Xevious 'Razz' ), here are some build photo's (slideshow) that will help.

Please forgive the random order . Don't know why flickr jumbled the order up when I loaded them.

If you want to try something different there is a number of ways this could have been done, ie you could also mod a Caanoo or Wiz. You could use a PC stick with battery and PS One screen etc. Sky's the limit as it is with the different tabletops you could mod.

Anyway, feel free to ask me if you have any questions. I'll try and answer as best I can.
