Here's a wacky idea. Someone could take a Coleco Galaxian (which is the only Coleco tabletop to share Berzerk's design), remove the innards, paint it orange with some plastic bonding paint, and make and apply some stickers to match Berzerk. Then take the innards of a game with gameplay similar to Berzerk (more on this in a second) and install those innards in the Galaxian shell (probably the hardest part).

As for what game to use, I've been looking through the Museum looking for a good candidate. I've come to the conclusion that Bandai Tutankham would be the best choice. While the gameplay of the actual arcade games is pretty different, I think the gameplay of Coleco Berzerk would have been similar to Tutankham, based on the screenshot in the Coleco catalog. The only problems with this choice is the horizontal orientation of the VFD on Tutankham (maybe you could turn the display on its side and modify the control wiring and setup) and the fact that there would be no two-player (the second set of controls would be cosmetic).

I've often considered trying to make some new oldschool games, maybe on the arduino or something. It'd have to be LED games though as LCD or VFD are not going to be possible to make at home.
Someone did an LED platform but it was terribly expensive. I was thinking of doing something in a tomytronics 3d case but there'd be plenty room in a coleco and you could create the graphics using cut out, etched or black ink screened onto clear plastic to create a blank that'd sit in front of the LED array.
