This game reminds me on some tech magazine I had as kid, showing how to make these displays, and finally a fruit slot machine yourself.
It consists of a stack of acrylate sheets, and in each sheet you drill shallow holes as you like to create a shape.
Then you attach a small tube light-bulb (nowadays you would use SMT LED's) to the edge of the sheet, and cover it with black tape.
Repeat for each image, then stack the sheets together. Enjoy this highly complicated display! It does allow sprite stacking though, something impossible with LCD or VFD. |

Sounds more like the Rosy Casino de Vegas:

Similar concept to Space Venture, just more of a slot machine design.
And it's exactly as you describe... On these games, they've actually used normal incandescent light bulbs (very tiny ones) soldered to the circuit board... As such, they will burn out eventually... The tech-savy can replace them, but it's kind of a pain to do it (and probably deemed not worth the effort for a 'cheap game' back in the day, might be why these are so uncommon... Few bulbs burn out, you just throw it away...? Just a guess really, but this is the first Space Venture I've ever seen, and I think I only know of two of the Casino themed ones (maybe 3?)...) |

Just a quick note on the rarity of this game: I have had this game on my website since 2010 And two other NIB copies on ebay in the same year. Still since then I havn't seen it anywhere else.
