I bought an extra Double Dragon II (my all-time favorite handheld) just so I could do this. i added a 100ohm (i think) resistor so that i wouldn't go deaf. these things are loud as hell. i'll have to take it apart again tomorrow and figure out why it won't shut all the way. it's probably the jack itself pushing up against the game's innards.
i have an extra Mega Man 2 somewhere, so on that one i'm going to try to keep the speaker intact and put a jack on the side that cuts it off when something is plugged in.
or maybe put some type of backlight in this modded Double Dragon II.
or maybe i, i don't know, go to sleep since it's going on 4am.

I've added AC adapter plugs on games that didn't have them, like the Coleco Mini Arcades. I wired them all up with the same plug, and really beefy power supply so I can run 10-15 of them at once off one power supply. It's great for game gatherings...
I've always wanted to put a 9-pin Atari style joystick port on the Coleco arcades too, so you can use a 'real' joystick with them. Audio output would be nice to.
Try connecting a tiny little pot to the output and glue it inside the game with a screw-driver access hole on the outside. Then you can adjust the volume if you want.
Then add a small video camera over the screen, connect it to a projector and then the external joysticks!!! Sit back and play it 'big screen' style. 
I may seriously have to do that for the next game expo I go to... |

i could have sworn you had a page on HHM where you did a dual-josytick mod with a Coleco Pac-Man, but i can't seem to find it here nor anywhere else on the internet for that matter.
when i finished building that Meggy arcade thing a few years back, my next project was to take a bunch of Tiger Electronics games and convert them into "cartridges". each one would have a 15-pin connection for sound and full button output (ground, speaker, 4 directions, 4 soft function keys [which are normally off,sound,pause,on/start], 4 action buttons, ACL). the cartridge would sit in a "base" with a speaker and a large control panel with arcade buttons/stick. you would still use the original screen on the game to play, but a light/magnifier would sit in front.
i drew up some brainstorming designs but never built a prototype.
