Tandy Kingman - 1984 (VFD)
This is the best Donkey Kong clone in my opinion.
I got the price sticker for this one. Radio Shack - $29.95 In today's dollars (considering inflation), that'd be around $75. That would have been a very tough buy for me back in the mid 80's with all of the consoles out, like the NES.
This is very unique, because it's a small, compact handheld. It's easy to hold and pretty comfortable too.
This was licensed to Tandy from Tomy. Tomy has a tabletop version, which is very cool, especially the Japanese boxed one.
This game has everything from the classic story, graphics, sounds, variety of play, to the awesome gameplay.
Basically it's a boy save girl story. For some reason the Kingman, big guy at the top of the screen captured and locked up your girl. His wife, Mother King, is to the left of him in a cave (she also appears in the door windows to stop your accent), dropping Baby Kings in your path as you try to rescue the girl.
This clone has the most levels. You get to play through 4 different levels. On the fourth level, a sword appears at the top so you can defeat the Kingman. The cycle will then repeat, but slightly faster.
It's a well balanced game and a lot of great fun. The graphics are spectacular, the beeps are cool, and the form factor is excellent. Overall, it's a superb game!
