It was a Retailer in Canada and the eastern US. They mailed out their catalog's every season ( the Christmas season ruled obviously). The store basically was a distribution centre where you would go and fill out an order form and some person would go to the back room and bring you the item. I would literally spend whole nights at the kitchen table going through that catalog drooling over the Handhelds, Tyco tracks and Hot Wheels. Speaking of the season, Merry upcoming Christmas to you all
cheers

That sounds a lot like Argos which is still going strong in the UK -

They used to sell items at great prices but not anymore.

I loved Consumers (Distributing)! I used to shop there in Saskatchewan and also here in Calgary. They had appliances and jewellry and electronics and more. The jewelry was in a display case at the front of the store. The catalogue's pages at the store were bound in plastic for minimizing wear-and-tear. They also published annual and semi-annual catalogues, similar to (Simpson) Sears.
As a youngster, I would always bug the staff, to see if the "Gemini" game console has come in as it was always "out". The Gemini, was a generic brand of the Atari 2600. (I think that is what it was, but I never got one.)
From here-say and rumour, I think the Calgary ConsumersDistributing were purchased by the Singer sewing maching company and they closed shortly after. This was in the 1990s. I don't know if there is any fact in this statement though.
Sincerely,
jonjon

i loved consumers!!! what i didn't love is the little slips of paper and little pencils to fill out the catalog number to ultimately find out they were out of stock!! |
