Posted: Sat Feb 27, 2010 2:06 pm Post subject: CGL Super Kong Transistor Help Please ? |
|
|
Hi,
First post be gentle, I did look for a repair section to the forum as there was one on the webiste but decided to post here - apologies if that is considered wrong.
As the subject suggests :
I have a CGL SuperKong that has a blown transistor. It has some identification on it but I cannot find a modern day equivalent listed anywhere. Transistor = D789C it is a BCE type (T092 I think)
Does anyone know the equivalent I should be using to replace this component please? |

It's an NTE315. You can usually cross-reference them on NTE's website:
www.nteinc.com
A lot of electronic gadget type stores sell them (like Fry's in the US). Or you can order them online. I think they carry almost everything you can find in one of these games (well, except the CPU chip itself)...

Thanks Rik,
I'm going to try a BC639 - nearest equivalent I can find over the pond here, without going to the expense of shipping the exact item from the US. Unless of course you know a UK equivalent that is a better match ? |

I cannot source this component over here in the UK.
I searched Frys.com as suggested but NTE315 returns only NTE31 & NTE311 - so looks like even they don't stock it !!
Any alternatives or help for over the pond in the UK - most appreciated please !
Tried a BC639 nearest match I could find but it over heated - at least I've confirmed it is a faulty transistor though |

Do you still need this? I just ordered a few from a local company (never hurts to have spares... And even I can't find them in local stores here...) I can send you a couple if you still need them.

Yes please Rik. Still no joy over the pond.
Check your pm inbox for details.
Thanks. |

No problem, I'll let you know when they arrive (probably sometime this week, not sure where they are coming from...)

Actually, yeah, I did... Forgot all about them. I remember them being kind of large though, so hopefully they are the right thing. I should be able to get a couple out to you by the weekend.

Rik,
Just to be sure I've posted some photo's below:
The yellow circle shows the offending component.
So long as they fit I'd like to try a replacement. There is plenty of space around on the pcb ! |

Yeah, that's what I expected it to look like... What's funny is, I think it's more the size of the dotted lines drawn on the circuit board... I've seen capacitors come in varying sizes depending on who made them... Not sure. I'll double check the spec sheet just to make sure, but at this point it really can't hurt to try.
And I just realized I have one of these games laying around too (it might even be broken also), I'll have to open that up and check it out myself... If it's non-working, I might try the transistor and see what happens...

Okay, update to this...
First, a question: Did it look like anyone attempted repair on that game already?
Here's why: That's not the right transistor... I got my game out of storage, and it does work (never opened), so I opened it to look at it, here's what I found:
The transistor should be a big, square one like that. It's part number is C1173 (which can be cross-referenced to NTE# NTE152).
The little one, just in case, should be C945 (NTE# NTE85)
NTE315 is the right part for what you have in the machine now, but that is not what should be there... Check your local sources for NTE parts and see if 152 is available. If the D789C didn't cause damage to anything else, replacing it with a 152 should fix it... I'll check my local outlets tomorrow and see if I can get the part easily here. |

Strange, D789C was the original.
The photo was the replacement that I tried - similar - nearest I could find BC639 but obviously not the original.
I cannot get a NTE315 - I'll look for a NTE152 and post later.
Closest I can find over the pond is Ireland
http://ie.farnell.com/nte-electronics/nte152/transistor/dp/4428043
But look at the postage -
Even when I try a multinational like RS Components
http://uk.rs-online.com/web/25.....e152_Broad
Still has £10 postage for a component costing £1.50
I'm in the wrong business !! |

I'll check today for a 152 at my local stores. That might be one they carry... If I can find one, I'll include that and the 315 and send them both to you.
It's possible that they figured a D789C would work just as well (or, maybe not just as well... ) and was a cheaper alternative than the C1173... I'm sure there's a small range of transistors that will work depending on what it's doing. But some might last longer than others...

Thanks Rik,
I cannot believe these items have been so hard to locate.
I have even tried some of the independents but it looks like these components are imported from Japan or the US and then this shipping charge is passed on to the consumer in its entirety.
What I fail to understand is how a multi-national company such as RS components which must have parts being shipped from the US to Europe on a daily basis can justify such a mark up - so why must they charge £10 in addition to the component price of £1.05 for P&P. The component is small enough to be sent first class for less than £0.50 !!
Once again thanks to Rik for his efforts and info. |
